Eugene Danzey

Born in Tampa in 1933, Eugene Danzey began his career in broadcasting in 1963 at WTMP radio in Tampa as an account executive in the sales department, becoming the first African-American salesman for a major broadcaster in Tampa Bay.

In 1967, he was promoted to Sales Manager and became the top salesman throughout the chain of six radio stations, for which he was promoted to Vice President and General Manager of WTMP in 1970.  In 1975, he decided to go into business for himself, bringing WRXB Radio on the air in St. Petersburg as the first African-American owned radio station in this market.

Active in his community, Eugene Danzey is best known for his work with the Urban League and for his efforts to improve community conditions through crime prevention, voter registration, and urban redevelopment.  He was appointed by Governor Martinez to the Pinellas County Housing Authority and served for many years as its chairman.
